On September 1st, Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem to make a statement about racial injustice. This kneel sparked national attention and lead to more protests from other teams. High schools and professional sports teams have followed with these protests in response to Kaepernick's kneel. A few of the teams on the list include Garfield High School in Seattle, the Seattle Sea Hawks, the San Francisco 49s, the Saint Louis Rams and Laguna Creek High School in California.
The NCAA also recently engaged in a major athletic protest. The athletic organization made the decision to pull games that were set to take place in North Carolina in response to the states discriminatory laws allowing the mistreatment of the LGBTQ community. Because the local law in North Carolina went against the beliefs of the organization, the NCAA decided to take a stand. By refusing to play games in North Carolina, the NCAA was able to make a public statement.
Taking a stand in athletics also means standing up for causes and spreading awareness. Through commercials, fundraising and pink uniforms the NFL has shown their support. NFL players can be seen wearing pink football gear to show their support for the cause. These athletes use their platform to raise awareness for a cause on a national level.
